Carter was arrested in Jonesboro after cops say they found marijuana on him. He reportedly missed a court date in Miss. and had a warrant out for his arrest when cops cuffed and seated him in the back of a squad car.
It is at the point where the details behind Carter’s death gets murky. Cops claim Carter had a gun–one that officers on the scene claim to have missed–that he could have used on himself.

Sgt. Lyle Waterworth of the Jonesboro Police Dept. says that the officers followed procedure:
“As protocol, he was handcuffed behind his back, double locked and searched,” said Waterworth.
But Waterworth does admit that the gun was missed by his officers. Something he says can easily happen.
“Any given officer has missed something on a search,” said Waterworth. “Be it drugs, be it knives, be it razor blades. This instance happened to be a gun,” he said.
