Sunday March 4, 1990 Loyola Marymount basketball player Hank Gathers died of cardiac arrest during the finals of the West Coast Conference basketball tournament. The nation’s leading scorer and rebounder was a certain NBA Lottery pick but it never happened. The team then made a remarkable run in the NCAA Tournament to the Elite 8 before losing to the eventual national champion UNLV.
