When it comes to you and your car, does the District want to keep you out?

“To be honest, trying to squeeze as many cars as we try to squeeze into our city streets isn’t working,” says Gabe Klein, director of the D.C. Department of Transportation.

The city simply wasn’t designed with the automobile in mind.

“One of the things we really need to do is capitalize on the fact that our built environment was not built for the automobile. That’s a fact,” Klein says.

“It was built back when street cars were pulled by horses, the vast majority of people walked and there were many cyclists,” Klein says.

Klein is trying to work with the D.C. City Council to make multiple modes of transportation useful in the District.
