VIA THE WASHINGTON POST:

A jewelry store owner in his mid-70s staved off an armed robbery in Montgomery County on Tuesday by firing his gun, possibly hitting one or both robbers, county police said.

The two men remained at large Tuesday evening, police said.

Authorities said the incident occurred about 2 p.m. at Sandro Jewelry Boutique, in the 3700 block of Howard Avenue on Antique Row in Kensington.

After the men entered the store, posing as customers, one tried to distract the owner, and the other tried to steal cash, police said. The owner confronted at least one of the men, who pulled out a handgun, police said. A scuffle ensued.

“The shop owner, who was also armed with a gun, pulled his gun out and fired shots at the suspects,” said Officer Melanie Brenner, a police spokeswoman.

Police would not say what kind of guns either the owner or robber had. The men fled on foot without taking anything. Police gave only a vague description of the men.

By 3 p.m., officers were scouring the area around the store. “We’re trying to find these guys,” said Sgt. C. Thomas Jordan, a police spokesman. “They may be injured.”

The owner was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, and he was still there as of 6:30 p.m., relatives said.

Police ask anyone with information to call 240-773-5100 or 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
