Pedestrian Hit By Metro Bus

A woman who officials said was struck by a Metrobus while jogging in Northwest Washington on Thursday has been hospitalized with “life-threatening injuries,” according to Metro spokeswoman Taryn McNeil.

The bus, heading north on Connecticut Avenue about 8:35 a.m., was turning right onto Florida Avenue when it struck the woman, McNeil said.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was taken by ambulance to George Washington University Hospital, McNeil said.

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesman Pete Piringer said the woman was a Priority One, meaning she has serious and life-threatening injuries. He said that the bus driver was also taken to the hospital for a medical checkup.

Officer Helen Andrews of the D.C. police said that the major crash investigation unit is on the scene, just north of Dupont Circle. That is standard procedure in a potentially fatal crash, she said.

The Metrobus, No. 4262, was not in service at the time of the accident, McNeil said. The driver was heading to the northern bus garage at 14th and Crittenden streets NW. McNeil said that the driver, who will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation, will be given a drug and alcohol test, which is also standard procedure.
