St. Raphael of Brooklyn Orthodox Church in Chantilly will be welcoming renowned author and speaker Frederica Mathewes-Green for a visit to our area on October 22, 2011. Frederica's thoughts on topics ranging from abortion and feminism to early Christian spirituality have sparked discussion and stirred the hearts of readers around the world -- and have called more than a few Protestants to rediscover the historic roots of their Christian faith. A sought-after speaker and best-selling author, Frederica regularly contributes to a number of publications, including Christianity Today, First Things, and National Review Online, and has been interviewed by the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Diane Rehm. Her books include Facing East; Gender: Men, Women, Sex and Feminism; and The Jesus Prayer: The Ancient Desert Prayer that Tunes the Heart to God.

Frederica will be speaking at our parish following Vespers (which begins at 6:00 p.m.). She'll deliver a talk entitled "East, West, East: A Spiritual Journey," in which she'll tell the story of how she found her "heart's true home" in Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Please consider joining us for the talk -- we'd be thrilled to see you there!

If you have any questions regarding Frederica's visit, please feel free to contact David Reese at (202) 674-0179. You also can contact our priest, Fr. Thomas Palke, at (703) 222-2422. You'll find our mission at 4429 Brookfield Corporate Drive, #500 Chantilly, VA 20151, and online at www.straphaelva.org.

We all want a sustainable future, but what does it look like, and how do we get there?

Liz Walker, co-founder of the EcoVillage at Ithaca and co-developer of its three cohousing communities, points the way forward in her new book "Choosing a Sustainable Future."

"Choosing a Sustainable Future" looks at sustainability from a "whole systems" approach integrating the three spheres of environmental, economic and social sustainability resulting in a powerful sense of community and sense of place.

Find out more about this whole systems approach and meet Liz herself at one of the author events in an upcoming book tour sponsored by Mid Atlantic Cohousing May 12-15, 2011 here in the Pennsylvania, Maryland, DC and Virginia areas.
