(Washington, DC) — Federal transportation leaders say critical equipment designed to prevent crashes was malfunctioning for 18 months before Metro’s deadly crash on the Red line. At a Thursday news conference, General Manager John Catoe said he doesn’t know why the problem went unnoticed. The National Transportation Safety Board says other problems have been detected in the system. Catoe also said it’s important not to jump to conclusions, and added more testing is needed.
