VIA THE WASHINGTON POST:

Prosecutors began presenting evidence to the grand jury in Arenas’s case Tuesday.

Sources said it would be an ongoing process, meaning they would present evidence as they receive it.

Two law enforcement sources said Tuesday morning that prosecutors planned on presenting evidence to a Superior Court grand jury in the Gilbert Arenas gun case as soon as today.

The case would go to the existing panel. The Examiner reported this morning that a grand jury had been convened for the case and it was “mulling” bringing gun charges against the Washington Wizards guard.

If the grand jury decides to charge Arenas, the indictment could come later this week. The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the case is ongoing, cautioned that they are still investigating. If they uncover more evidence, they would present that to the panel and that could delay charges, the sources said.

The Post reported today that on the team flight home from Phoenix on Dec. 19, Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton got into a heated argument over a card game. Crittenton, who was annoyed about losing money in the game, threatened to shoot Arenas in his surgically repaired left knee.

When the players arrived for practice two days later, Arenas placed at least three unloaded guns on a chair near Crittenton’s locker room stall with a note that read, “Pick one.” Although Arenas was attempting to be funny, Crittenton became upset, angrily tossed the guns to floor and flung one across the room, claiming that he had his own gun, some players said.

Arenas could face charges of carrying a handgun without a license, a felony, that carries a maximum five years in jail. Since he told investigators he had four guns, he could face five years for each of the guns.

He also could be charged with possessing an unregistered firearm, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum 12 months. The grand jury also could decide to “no bill,” or not bring any charges at all.
