The 89-year-old man accused in June’s fatal shooting at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum died Wednesday, according to his defense attorney and prison officials.

James W. von Brunn, a white supremacist, died of undetermined causes while in custody of U.S. authorities in North Carolina, where he was undergoing psychological tests at a federal prison, his attorney said.

His lawyer, the District’s federal public defender A.J. Kramer, said he did not know the cause of death or the circumstances. Von Brunn was wounded by a museum security guard after he opened fire on another guard on June 10,. That guard, Stephen T. Johns, 39, died.

Von Brunn was shot in the face.

Prison officials confirmed the death. Felicia Ponce, a spokeswoman for the federal prison system, said Von Brunn was pronounced dead shortly before 1 p.m. at a hospital near the prison, where he has being held.
