After receiving an anonymous tip, investigators found her in the apartment — which is about a half-mile from where she was staying with her aunt, Kiesha Buie — at about 4 a.m. They could not not find anyone to let them in, but after hearing the girl scream for help, they kicked down the door. She was then taken to a local hospital with a scratch on her leg, reports NBC Action News.

The young girl said that she was home alone because she overslept and missed her school-bus. When she didn’t show for school, officials with the district said that they placed a call to her home that went unanswered.

In an interview, Buie, visibly emotional and shaken, told reporters that her niece told her in detail what happened when she spoke with her Friday:

She was, like, ‘I was upstairs and, um, heard somebody downstairs, and I thought it was you because I’m the only one with a key. She was like, ‘I didn’t pay no attention (in the bathroom) and as I turned around there’s two men in your house. She said she was tied up. She was blindfolded or something like that. I’m not for sure. I don’t know. Don’t nobody know what’s going on. I can only believe what my niece is telling me right now.”

After hearing that her niece had been sexually assaulted, Buie said that she wasn’t concerned about that:

My niece is alive, so I don’t give two dents, rape, whatever. My niece is alive. That’s all I was worried about.
Though Buie voiced concerns that a former tenant may have used a key to re-enter her apartment, police are investigating the possibility that the girl may have been involved with the man who owned the apartment where the 11-year-old was found.
