The Los Angeles Times reports:

Caracter was detained and booked under several charges: one count of battery for hitting the employee, one count of public intoxication and one for resisting arrest. He was later released from jail after bond was posted. Caracter, 22, reportedly grabbed and shoved a cashier at an IHOP restaurant on Canal Street, according to New Orleans police.

The account, issued in a police news release Monday morning, said the Lakers rookie forward had been refused service at the IHOP because he was “obviously drunk, unruly.” A police officer was summoned to try to defuse the situation. Backup arrived after Caracter would not cooperate.

Washington Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth has been charged with simple assault in Virginia. Police say he threw a punch at a fellow motorist Wednesday in a Washington, D.C., suburb.

Fairfax County authorities told The Washington Post that Haynesworth, 29, plans to turn himself in next week through his attorney. But Haynesworth’s agent, Chad Speck, said Friday the player had yet to speak to police or prosecutors.

Haynesworth allegedly threw a punch to the nose of Joel Velazques, 38, of Lessburg, Va.

TMZ.com reported that Davis and a female customer at Josephine night club were involved in an altercation and that after he grabbed her, she threw a drink in his face and he retaliated by throwing a drink in her face, and later struck her with what was believed to be a Champagne bottle.

A third lawsuit has been against Bishop Eddie Long, alleging he coerced a man to have sex with him, the plaintiff’s attorney told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The third suit was filed Wednesday afternoon in DeKalb County Superior Court, said a spokeswoman for attorney B.J. Bernstein.

Long was not immediately available Wednesday, but is holding a news conference Thursday morning.

A substitute Loudoun County school bus driver was charged with simple assault after allegedly striking a student who refused to turn down his iPod, authorities said.

Lavangila N. McKissic, 35, of Round Hill, was driving students through Purcellville about 4 p.m. on April 27 when she repeatedly asked a student, who was not using headphones, to turn down his MP3 player, sheriff’s spokesman Kraig Troxell said. The 15-year-old boy, a student at Harmony Intermediate School, didn’t.

Witnesses reported that McKissic stopped the bus, grabbed the iPod from the teenager and struck him in the head, Troxell said. He said the teenager was not injured.

Troxell said another student on the bus reported the incident the following day. He said the School Resource Officer launched an investigation.

A schools spokesman said McKissic has been suspended. He said students are allowed to have MP3 players on the bus provided the music is quiet.

Seventeen students at Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Prince George’s County were arrested and charged with assault Tuesday after a massive fight in a school hallway, police said.

The chaos erupted about 9:30 a.m., when a sheriff’s deputy was called to the second floor for a reported fight, police said. That deputy saw as many as 100 students fighting or watching the fracas, though school staff members moved quickly to break it up, police said.

It is unclear what sparked the incident, though investigators think it stemmed from a dispute between rival neighborhood crews known as Brightseat Road and Palmer Park, authorities said. Police said a student who was expelled from the school last year but allowed to return this year is believed to have been the primary instigator.

No one was seriously injured, although one student’s lip was split with a screwdriver, police said. His attacker, a 16-year-old boy, was charged as an adult with first-degree assault, police said. The other 16 students, 15 males and 1 female, were charged with second-degree assault, disorderly conduct and disruption of school activities.

Police did not identify any of those charged.

School officials disputed the police account, saying the incident began when an “adult male outsider” who transferred from Flowers last year reentered the school using his old ID.

The man, who had posted a threat a day earlier on his Facebook page directed at a rival crew, started the fight and then left, school officials said.

“What happened today is not symbolic or representative of what is going on at this school,” Principal Helena Nobles-Jones said in the statement. “The students of Flowers have made AYP(Adequate Yearly Progress) consistently and increasing student achievement remains our first priority.”

Lamya Cammon is angry, confused, and scared by the incident last week in which the apparently frustrated teacher cut one of her braids off after she wouldn’t stop playing with them in class.

Cammon, 7, sports a few dozen braids, but one is conspicuously absent.

“She told me to stop playing with it. Then cut it off and sent me back to my desk,” Cammon said.

Cammon’s a first-grader at Congress Elementary and said her teacher used a pair of classroom scissors to cut off one of the braids after she absent-mindedly kept playing with them.

The sexual assault conviction of a well-known civil rights leader is about to be erased from the books because of a little-known aspect of criminal law — and the man’s death.

The man is James L. Bevel, a 71-year-old former Loudoun County resident. He died last December, two months after a judge imposed a 15-year sentence for repeatedly having sex with his daughter, but also after his attorney had filed an appeal. The law in federal court, and most states, is clear: If a defendant dies while his appeal is pending, the entire case is dismissed as if it had never happened.

The most publicized example of “abatement” occurred in 2006, when Enron executive Kenneth L. Lay died about a month after his conviction on numerous counts of securities fraud, before he had been sentenced. The trial judge in Houston threw out the case and also any request for restitution through the criminal case.

The idea behind abatement is that a case being appealed isn’t final. The defendant could still be cleared upon a higher court’s review.
