A memorial celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be erected on the National Mall on August 28th.

President Barack Obama will give an address at the Aug. 28 Memorial Dedication.

What a Government Shut Down Means For DC

There’s no getting around it. Washington, DC and its surrounding area was built on the back of the Federal government so the looming government shutdown will surely have a debilitating effect on the region’s workers. If no budget gets passed in Congress in time the federal government will be forced into furlough on Friday at midnight.

DC Named Nation’s Happiest City

Are you happy? Hopefully you are because the Nation’s Capitol was named the nation’s happiest city, according to a new poll.

The DC Metro areas not tops the list but is also the only East Coast city in the top 5. The cities that round out the top five are Austin, Texas, San Jose, Calif., Seattle and San Francisco.

The survey measured such factors as life evaluation, emotional health, work environments, physical health, healthy behaviors and basic access.

DC Second Only To LA In Council Pay

(Washington, DC) – DC Council members trail only their counterparts in Los Angeles when it comes to annual salary. According to a just released survey by the Pew Charitable Trust, the average DC Council member earns nearly 126-thousand-dollars a year with DC Council Chairman Kwame Brown making 190-thousand. That averages out to nearly 131-thousand-dollars a year, trailing only L-A’s average of almost 179-thousand-dollars a year. However, while DC Council members are considered part-time employees and free to hold other jobs, L-A Council members are considered full-time employees. Members of the New York City Council average just under 122-thousand-dollars a year to come in third place in the survey. A total of 15 U.S. cities were studied.

President Obama Honors World Champion LA Lakers At DC Area Boys And Girls Club

The leader of the free world and the basketball’s world champions paid a special visit to children volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club at THEARC yesterday.

President Obama, Coach Phil Jackson, Kobe Bryant and the rest of the Los Angeles Lakers, who were also in town to play against the Washington Wizards, took part in a NBA Cares community service event. They were also honored by the president for the franchise’s 16th NBA Championship and second consecutive.

Caught On Camera: Teens Harass Metro Passengers

A group of teenage girls harass people on the Metro and one gets physical. It took Metro Police 30 minutes to get there. One of the victims is Elizabeth Jia, a multimedia journalist at 9 NEWS NOW. Jia was on her way to Union Station when she says five teenage girls got on. Jia used her cell phone to record video of the girls harassing a female Metro rider.”They started laughing seeing that the girl physically removed herself,” Jia said.

When the teenager sitting next to Jia saw her phone– Jia says she took it. “She put her finger up on my face,” Jia said pointing to her forehead. “She took my phone and she threw it across to the other side of the Metro train and it shattered.”

Jia says she got off at the next stop, told the manager, and requested a Metro Police Officer come to take her statement. “We waited and no one came,” Jia said. Jia says she waited there 25 minutes.Leslie Campbell, Metro Transit Police, said an officer did come.”The officer arrived approximately 30 minutes after he was dispatched,” Campbell said. “She was no longer in danger, and she was not injured, and the threat had gone.”

Other Metro riders said harassment and fights are common. Campbell said crime has decreased in the Metro overall. “We have had occasions where there has been harassment and unfortunately, it’s an ongoing thing,” he said. Jia is working with Metro to follow up on the incident. Campbell suggests that riders ask for an officer’s estimated arrival time. He said when an officer shows up depends on where he or she is in the Metro system.

The neighborhood sits on a top-25 list that is topped by Chicago's W.
