There is nothing new about black women’s desire to return to their natural roots by rejecting the modern norm of frying their hair with relaxers and other chemical-laced hairstyles.

But two sisters in Detroit, Charise and Jennifer Thomas, host “Naturally Flyy Detroit” natural hair meetups where lock-wearing, Afro-styling sistas can come together and learn how to wear their hair just as God intended, the Detroit News reports.

The two sisters hold the meetups in the kitchen of their west-side bakery, “Sweet Potato Sensations,” that they co-own with their parents. When they organized their first meeting, they expected 20-30 women, but more than 100 RSVP’d.

The Detroit News has more:

“We try to promote African-American women to wear their hair the way it naturally grows out of their head and give them tips, resources, tools, fun times, sisterhood, and all that good kind of stuff,” says Charise, 31.

When their family moved the bakery into larger quarters on Lahser just round the corner from Grand River in 2010, the two sibs realized they had room to host events.

“It was my idea to start the hair meetup because when I started to wear my hair like this (natural) I wanted to make sure I had all the information I needed,” says Jennifer, 29, who wore her hair relaxed — chemically straightened — from fifth grade through her sophomore year in college. “I wanted to know all the styles, all my options.”

For all any women in the Detroit area who want to know all of their options, there is a Naturally Flyy Detroit taking place on Natural Hair Meetup Day at 3 p.m. May 19, at Artist Village on Lahser just north of Grand River.
