‘My Grandma Just Shot Me,’ Dying Teen Tells 911 Operator!

Sandra Layne, a 74-year-old grandmother from West Bloomfield, Michigan is accused of shooting her 17-year-old grandson, Jonathan Hoffman, to death on May 18, Fox 2 News Detroit reports.

Layne was “bound over for trial on charges of open murder and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony” during a preliminary hearing on Monday, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The former school teacher fired her Glock ten times during the incident. Five of those shots hit Hoffman at close range, with three hitting the teen in the chest, one in the arm and another in his stomach. As cops arrived at Layne’s condo, they reportedly heard shots being fired.

“I had told her to keep her hands up.  As she was walking out of the house with her hands up, she had advised me and screamed to me that ‘I murdered my grandson,’” said West Bloomfield Officer Derrick Kassab.

Hoffman died at the scene.

According to Layne’s lawyer, an argument sparked by Hoffman’s drug use triggered the shooting. Here is some testimony during Layne’s court hearing addressing that issue:

Dr. Reuben Ortiz Reyes (Oakland County Deputy Medical Examiner ) testified Hoffman tested positive for K2 in his urine, but not his bloodstream, so he wasn’t under the influence of drugs at the time.

“He tested positive for spice.  It was a violation with his probation.  He was concerned about going to jail and he wanted to do certain things, and that’s when the argument erupted,” said Jerome Sabbota, Layne’s attorney.  “She was fearful.  She killed a person that she loved, that she tried to save.  There are no winners.  No matter what we do to her, it doesn’t really matter.  Watch her.  She’s in her own hell.”

The Detroit Free Press reports that Layne called 911 in March over an argument she had with her grandson.

Sabbota described Hoffman as a troubled teen who got in and out of trouble. His parents live in Arizona and were not present in court on Monday. Layne remains behind bars. She is scheduled to be arraigned in Oakland County Circuit Court on July 12, according to The Free Press.
