(Rockville, MD) — A Montgomery County firefighter who has been with the department for more than two decades is being accused of soliciting sex from what he thought was a 16-year-old girl. Lieutenant Wayne Mothershead has been placed on administrative leave with pay and will appear in court for a preliminary hearing next week. Police say Mothershead used his county e-mail address last month to begin an online chat with someone who had posted on Craigslist. Police spokeswoman Lucille Baur says two of their officers were working a sting operation and Mothershead was caught when he drove to the Holbrook Shopping Center in Gaithersburg on July 20th looking for a teenager, thinking he would have a sexual encounter.
Mothershead’s attorney, Rebecca Nitkin, tells the “Washington Post” she does not believe there is sufficient evidence to prove the charges.
