NFL: Philadelphia Eagles at Oakland Raiders

On Tuesday’s “NewsOne Now, “ Former NFL player and scout Bucky Brooks joined Roland Martin to discuss the controversy surrounding former Eagles player DeSean Jackson. Jackson was released from his contract with the Eagles late last week on the heels of reports that he has “gang affiliations.” NJ.com reported:

..Sources close to Jackson and within the Eagles’ organization say, it originally was Jackson’s off-field behavior that concerned the front office. A bad attitude, an inconsistent work ethic, missed meetings and a lack of chemistry with head coach Chip Kelly were the original reasons for his fall from grace, sources told NJ.com.

And when the Eagles looked more deeply into why Jackson was missing meetings, they found that his friends were becoming a more powerful — and negative — influence in his life.

Then, suddenly, the Eagles had even more serious concerns when they were revealed by NJ.com — Jackson’s continued association with reputed Los Angeles street gang members who have been connected to two homicides since 2010.

Both Martin and Brooks suspect, however, that allegations Jackson is affiliated with gang members were floated by the Eagles and leaked to the press in order to justify cutting him from the team. ”This to me sets a dangerous trend but it’s one we’ve always seen, where teams will leak things to damage a player knowing full well that other teams are looking at that,” Martin added.

Listen to the rest of the conversation between Martin and Brooks on Jackson.

Be sure to listen to “NewsOne Now” with Roland Martin, weekdays at 7 a.m. EST and watch at 9 a.m. EST on TV One.
