Carol’s Daughter Files For Bankruptcy

Companies affiliated with beauty brand Carol’s Daughter filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Thursday. According to court documents, Carol’s Daughter Stores LLC, filed a Chapter 11 petition with the Manhattan bankruptcy court. Court papers show that CD reported assets and debts each in the $1 million to $10 million range, was signed by Carol’s Daughter Chief Financial Officer John D. Elmer. Read more.

On-Duty NYPD Officer Charged With DWI After Shooting Partner in Wrist

WABC reports that Detective Jay Poggi accidentally shot his partner with his .38 at about 1:50 am Thursday. According to the New York Daily News, the shooting occurred as the two were having drinks in a Queens restaurant, where they’d stopped on their way to a Queens location as part of an investigation. After Poggi rushed his partner to the hospital, he reportedly refused to submit to a breath-alcohol test and was later charged with driving while intoxicated. Read more.

Michelle Obama will now address graduating high school seniors in Topeka, Kan., a day earlier than originally planned, the White House said Thursday, addressing concerns by students and parents that her participation in a combined graduation ceremony for five schools would limit seating for family and friends. Last week, it was announced that Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs would be Howard University’s 2014 commencement speaker and he would also receive an honorary doctorate in humanities at the ceremony. Some people questioned why Howard would give a college dropout a chance at the mic. Arkansas Judge Strikes Down State’s Voter ID Law

An Arkansas judge struck down the state’s new voter ID law on Thursday, saying it violates the state constitution by adding a requirement that voters must meet before casting a ballot.

Pulaski County Circuit Judge Tim Fox voided the measure in a lawsuit over the way absentee ballots are handled under the law. A separate lawsuit had been filed last week directly challenging the law, which requires voters to show photo identification before casting a ballot. Read more.

Chicago To Name High School After President Obama

President Barack Obama’s hometown of Chicago plans to name a high school after him. Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Thursday announced plans to build Barack Obama College PreparatoryHigh School. The selective enrollment high school will be open for the 2017-2018 school year. Chicago Public Schools says its enrollment will be 1,200 students. Read more.
