At number 22, the Atlantic and 4th Streets SE area, known as the Washington Highlands neighborhood, was found to have a 72.65 per 1,000 resident violent crime rate. Number one on the list is East St. Louis, IL with a violent crime rate of 100.97 per 1,000 residents.

NeighorhoodScout complied the list with data from their own intelligence services as well as from FBI data acquired from local law enforcement agencies around the country. The company ranked the cities based on violent crime— which include murder, forcible rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault— rates per 1,000 residents.

Illinois dominated the list with a total of six cities. Washington Highlands was the only D.C. neighborhood on the list.
