shawJust call him Superman!  Josh Shaw (pictured), the team captain and cornerback for the University of Southern California’s (USC) football team the Trojans, will reportedly be sidelined indefinitely, after leaping from a second story apartment balcony Saturday night and injuring his ankles. His feat ending up rescuing his 7-year-old nephew who was drowning in a pool, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The incident took place at a family function being held in an apartment complex in Palmdale, Calif. Shaw reportedly spotted his young nephew, Carter, who is unable to swim, flailing helplessly in the complex’s pool.

The promising player reportedly lept from a second-floor balcony, landed painfully on a concrete ground, then crawled in to the pool to save the boy. Despite having excruciating pain, Shaw was able to pull himself out of the water by grabbing on to a ladder in the pool.

Reportedly, Carter is “traumatized” but suffered no injuries as a result of the near-drowning.

Despite the fact, Shaw will not be able to play ball this season for his team, but he does not regret his decision, telling USC News, “I would do it again for whatever kid it was. It did not have to be my nephew,” Shaw said. “My ankles really hurt, but I am lucky to be surrounded by the best trainers and doctors in the world. I am taking my rehab one day at a time, and I hope to be back on the field as soon as possible.”

Shaw, who is considered one of the best at his position in college football was also heralded by his team’s coach, Steve Sarkisian, who, according to the LA Times, was impressed with the young man’s heroics, “That was a heroic act by Josh, putting his personal safety aside. But that’s the kind of person he is. It is unfortunate that he’ll be sidelined for a while and we will miss his leadership and play, but I know he’ll be working hard to get back on the field as soon as possible.”
