The turnaround on the latest flap over a cartoon of President Obama is suspiciously short. And we’ve been through this routine so many times before. The most recent offending item, which depicts the president in his bathroom at the White House while an intruder asks him if he has “tried the new watermelon-flavored toothpaste” only ran this morning. (As reported on NewsOne Now, a White House intruder with a knife may have made it all the way into East Room).

Queue up the public outcry, exemplified below in a Tweet by Keith Boykin. Now it’s barely mid-day, and already there’s an apology by cartoonist Jerry Holbert.

Keith Boykin Tweet on Obama Cartoon

Did we all just get played for clicks and eyeballs by a media outlet who knew there would be a flurry of complaints from Black Twitter and elsewhere? The cartoon is still up on the newspaper’s homepage and Holbert’s page as of 12:40 p.m. ET.

Or: Was this a legitimate satire depicting a black president who is barely protected by an incompetent Secret Service and vulnerable to racists, a situation about which we should all be worried — especially with the latest security breach?

It’s worth noting Keith Boykin’s take. He Tweeted a collage other offensive Obama cartoons by Holbert, observing, “Given Holbert’s history, I don’t think he was trying to make intruder look bad. He was trying to make Obama look bad.”

What do you think?
