The Golden State Warriors made history last night by winning their first NBA championship in 40 years. Led by Warriors point guard and league MVP Stephen Curry, the team defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers on their home court and put LeBron James’ dream of bringing a championship title to his hometown to a halt. The Cavaliers have not won in 51 years. “To be able to hold this trophy is special,” Curry said during a post-game interview. “This is truly special. This is a special group. When we started the season this is what we envisioned.” Curry netted a total of 25 points in the 105-97 win. LeBron James finished the game with 32 points, 18 rebounds, and nine assists. Warriors forward Andre Iguodala was named Finals MVP. “This has been a long ride,” said Iguodala. “It’s been a great season.” Read more.


Black Americans Think Race Relations Are Nation’s Biggest Issue

Following the many incidents of police brutality over the past year, African-Americans believe that race relations in our country is the most important issue. According to a study, only 3 percent of Black Americans believed that race relations were a primary issue at the start of 2015. A new poll shows that the number has increased to 15 percent. “Just as blacks and whites differ in their views of race relations as a top U.S. problem, they also stand apart in their views on the fairness of the criminal justice system, confidence in police and the need for new civil rights laws,” said Gallup’s Alyssa Brown. “Gallup found last June that 68 percent of blacks said the American criminal justice system is biased against black people, significantly higher than the 25 percent of whites who said the same. And while 37 percent of blacks said they had a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in the police, 59 percent of whites said the same.” Read more.


Ebony and Jet Announce New Editorial Leaders

After facing hardships, Ebony and Jet are trying to bring new life to their publications. They recently announced two new editorial leaders at the helm of their magazines. Kierna Mayo has been named Editor-in-Chief at Ebony and Kyra Kyles will now serve as VP and head of digital at the Johnson Publishing Company. Mayo was formerly the editorial director of the publication. The two are looking to change the face of the magazines that have been around for decades. “In strategizing about what EBONY needs today, it’s clear that it is time to return to the maverick spirit that gave us our wings in the beginning,” Mayo said. “We don’t need permission to be daring.” Read more.
