Michelle Obama delivered the keynote address at South by Southwest in Austin, TX, on Wednesday. The First Lady promoted the Let Girls Learn initiative, which seeks to break barriers to education for girls. Obama said that 62 million girls around the world

First Lady Michelle Obama promoted the White House’s #LetGirlsLearn program Wednesday during her keynote address at South by South West’s annual event in Austin, Texas.

Let Girls Learn, a global initiative to educate an estimated 62 million underserved girls, has a new theme song. Mrs. Obama enlisted top musicians to record the song, “This is For My Girl.”

The celebrity artists include Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliott, Zendaya, Lea Michele, Chloe x Halle, Jadagrace, Janelle Monáe and Kelly Rowland.

In her speech, the First Lady also highlighted a new global pledge drive that asks the community to help girls obtain an education.

“Today we take the next step to get those girls into school where they belong. It’s time to act. Go to 62milliongirls.com and take the pledge to support girls’ education around the world.”

Five Things To Know About Let Girls Learn:

Federal agencies are collaborating through Let Girls Learn to give girls in some of the poorest regions of the world access to education. Opening school doors to them is the key to solving a variety of complex challenges they will face as women.

Democratic Republic of Congo: Two federal agencies, PEPFAR and USAID, are funding a five-year, $15.9 million initiative named Empowering Adolescent Girls to Lead through Education (EAGLE). It provides scholarships for 3,000 primary school students, and seeks to equip adolescent girls with educational, life, and leadership skills.

El Salvador: The federal program Millennium Challenge Corporation is investing $100.7 million to improve education in El Salvador, as well as support the Ministry of Education’s Gender Policy and Gender Unit.

Jordan: USAID provides training and materials to supervisors and teachers who are coping with the massive influx of Syrian refugee students in their classes.

Liberia: USAID supports more than 7,000 girls in 60 primary schools through Girls Opportunities to Access Learning (GOAL) Plus, the organization provides scholarship packages that include uniforms, supplies, backpacks, and hygiene kits.

Malawi: USAID’s Girls Empowerment through Education and Health Activity, known as ASPIRE, will improve education and health outcomes for over 125,000 adolescent girls. The program addresses specific challenges girls face in the Malawian Education System and is a collaborative effort between USAID and Malawi’s Education and Health Offices, implemented by Save the Children Federation.
