Feds Will Not File Charges In Kendrick Johnson Investigation

There will be no charges filed in the 2013 death of Kendrick Johnson, the U.S. Justice Department said Monday, citing insufficient evidence, CNN reported.

A medical examiner determined back in 2013 that Johnson died of accidental “positional asphyxia” after he was found dead in a rolled-up gym mat at Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia. Yet, a second autopsy found that the teen’s death was a result of homicide

However, the feds couldn’t prove their case and  met with Johnson’s family on Monday to tell them of their disappointing findings.

“The Department of Justice, in particular the lawyers and investigators who have worked tirelessly on this investigation, express their most sincere condolences to Kendrick Johnson’s parents, family, and friends,” Acting United States Attorney Carole Rendon said.

“We cannot imagine the pain of their loss, or the depths of their sorrow. We regret that we were unable to provide them with more definitive answers about Kendrick’s tragic death,” she added.

Johnson’s parents never believed the local authorities’ initial explanation that the 17-year-old teen got stuck in the mat after diving in to get his show, CNN noted. They believed their son was murdered.

Organizers estimated 50,000 people congregated on Sunday during a vigil one week after Orlando was rocked by the deaths of 49 people at the gay club Pulse, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

“It’s not just somebody’s son or somebody’s daughter,” said Enid Nieves-Cruz of Orlando. “It’s a coworker. It’s a friend of a friend. People’s lives have changed.”

“Mourn, but at the same time keep living,” she said. “I’m pretty sure that everyone who lost their lives and everybody that’s healing in the hospital would want us to. After all, they were out celebrating life.”

There were numerous speakers at the event, which also included reading the names and ages of each victim followed by the tolling of the church bell after each name. According to the Sentinel, a rainbow, the symbol of gay pride, appeared in the sky as mourners and well-wishers gathered. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer was left stunned by the size of the crowd that filled the park.

“Wow, Orlando,” Dyer said. “You’re showing your love, your compassion, your unity.”
