Folks are back at it again with hats lampooning presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump.
Remember this one?
Well, there’s a new hat created by Navajo artist Cynthia Bowen that knocks Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.” But most importantly, Bowen’s hat opens up a dialogue about the role of Native Americans in U.S. History.
“[I]t’s really sad that he says these really terrible things,” she said to ABC News. “He wants to build a wall that will truly divide people.”
Bowen, who is from Albuquerque, New Mexico, says she needs answers about Trump’s slogan – especially since Native Americans were the first to inhabit North American soil.
“When Donald Trump says, ‘Make America Great Again,’ what time period is he talking about?” Bowen told ABC. “A lot of people overlook that America’s history has been built upon injustice against other racial groups, including Native American people.”
The artist is selling the hats on her website for $30. She originally created 12, but has had dozens of requests from people in her community.
She says Trump’s campaign goes against her values as a Native American. Her slogan, “Make America Native Again” means, “going back to learning sustainability and learning to live in harmony with the environment. … It means going back to a matriarchal society in which we value and respect our women. It means going back to a sense of unity and community in which we nurture and care for each other rather than tear apart and divide each other.”
Bowen further told ABC News that she’s received some backlash, but hopes her message will open up a dialogue.
“I just want to spread more awareness about Native Americans and encourage more natives to write and tell our own stories so more people can know the truth and don’t have to rely on these false stereotypes,” she said.
