Infamous baseball legend Sammy Sosa made a recent appearance in the ESPN documentary #HRDerby, leaving fans jarred by his bleached skin color and concerned for the infamous athlete. The clip aired during the ESPYs earlier this week, sending Sosa’s name straight to the top of the trending charts.

The former MLB player revealed, in a 2009 interview, that he began using bleaching cream before bed. “It’s a cream that I have, that I use to soften [my skin], but has bleached me some,” he said. “I’m not a racist, I live my life happily. What happened was that I had been using the cream for a long time and that, combined with the bright TV lights, made my face look whiter than it really is. I don’t think I look like Michael Jackson.”

Well, the world thinks otherwise. It didn’t take long for the Internet to chime in on social media.

The affects of colorism are so profound. We hope Sosa gets some mental help because this is extreme and indicative of a deeper issue.
