Former Washington Football Team Head Coach & Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs joined The Kevin Sheehan Show to discuss his role in the Washington Football Team hiring Ron Rivera, plus a view revealing comments on Dwayne Haskins…

HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL SEEING FEDEX FIELD SOMETIMES HALF EMPTY OR FILLED WITH MORE FANS FROM OPPOSING TEAMS?

“Well it has been, and that can happen definitely. I think that’s one of the things we love about pro sports, it’s the greatest reality show in the world…I will tell ya, that fan base is sitting there, they’re waiting. I said to Ron (Rivera) when I had a chance to talk to him, I said this fan base is battle tested. Those people have been there forever, they passed down those tickets in their families. They’re there and they’ll be there and if you start winning their going to come roaring back. They are battle tested, they know good football and they know if you don’t do good thing’s they’re going to let you know it. But that’s the thrill, that’s what you want, you want a passionate fan base. And I think with Ron there’s an excitement now from what I picked up from everybody there. We got a new coach and I think we’ll start out on a new vision here for the Washington Football Team and I hope like all Washington Football Team fans we get going. If we get going you watch that stadium come alive.”

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES WITH TAKING THE Washington Football Team HEAD COACHING JOB, WHAT DID YOU TELL RON RIVERA?

“I told him look, when I was there Dan (Snyder) did nothing but support me. When I loss football games there it was my fault, not Dan’s, he was doing everything he could to support me. So I talked to Ron about Dan and working with him, and then the other thing I could help him with was coaching in Washington, what it’s like. That team is super important, every day things are written in the paper, they’re on the radio, they’re on the TV, we’re discussing it. That is an important thing, it’s a huge deal OK, and it’s a huge city with all of that intention. I felt like I could kind of give him somewhat of a picture of what it was like. I’ll say this with Ron too, what he did immediately, he got the film and he was studying the personnel. When we talked I think the thing that encouraged him the most about that job; I think he could’ve had 3-4 jobs, but the thing that encouraged him the most was when he was looking at those players, I think he believes they have players. I think he saw in that, it’s something that he could do with a good coaching staff and with Dan and ownership there, I think he feels like he can win there.”

DO THE Washington Football Team HAVE THE QUARTERBACK, WHAT’S YOU’RE EVALUATION OF DWAYNE HASKINS?

“I think that’s going to be probably the biggest decision. I would say the thing that confronts all of us is the quarterback thing. It’s been awhile since we’ve had ‘the’ quarterback with the Washington Football Team and I think that’s the thing they’ve got to solve. With Haskins I think it was great he a chance to play the last part of that season, I think that was great. The best way to evaluate a quarterback is on the field. Is he getting it done? So I think that’s part of the picture, I think that coaching staff and everybody is going to be looking at everything that took place the last part of the season when Haskins was playing. I think that’s going to be the key, do they believe he’s the guy? If he’s the guy, then we’re off and running. OK, if not we all know you’re not going to the playoffs, you’re not going to go to a Super Bowl unless you have a quarterback that’s playing at a high level.”
