Metro Plans Station Closures At Reagan National Airport This Weekend

Metro will shutter its Reagan National Airport station this weekend, forcing Labor Day weekend travelers to use shuttle buses or other forms of transportation during one of the busiest travel times of the year.

The transit agency plans to close the airport station, as well as the Crystal City and Pentagon City stations on the Blue and Yellow lines, from 10 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Tuesday for extensive maintenance. The closures are the result of long-planned track work, Metro has said.

Metro plans to provide shuttle bus service to the Pentagon Station, which could add about 45 minutes of travel time to and from the airport.

Airport officials have posted information on their Web site and will soon be making announcements over the intercom at the airport to alert passengers, airport spokeswoman Courtney Mickalonis said.

The closure is part of a much larger track rehabilitation project on the Blue and Yellow lines. Since early August, crews have been doing prep work. Metro is installing a new rail switch, which allows trains to move from one set of track to another, and replacing rail and fasteners. The bridge at the National Airport station is also being repaired.
