VIA MYFOXDC:

WASHINGTON – Washington’s Hot 99.5 Kane In The Morning show revealed that last week’s story about a man carrying around a sign that admitted he cheated on his wife was a hoax.

According to broadcasts on the station Wednesday morning, the show admitted to staging the story in an attempt to see how much media coverage it would receive given other major events happening at the same time.

Last week media coverage was centered on the death of Sen. Ted Kennedy.

Last Wednesday morning, a man who said his name was “William Taylor” carried a sigh that read, “I Cheated And This Is My Punishment,” on the corner of a busy Virginia intersection.

When asked why he was there, Taylor said, “I thought she was kidding, but she was serious. I figured I got to do what I got to do to makes things right. So here I am.”

myfoxdc posted the story and saw lots of web traffic and comments from users. Our reporter called “Taylor” and said he sounded legit. But “Taylor” would not confirm he was giving his real name or give us his wife’s phone number for us to call her.

The Kane Show had a woman referred to as “Taylor’s wife” on their radio broadcast Thursday August 27th. She said she didn’t want to talk about it and was vague about details.
