(Washington, DC) — Many District youth and education advocates are wondering whether today will be the last day of the Southeast Tennis and Learning Center. Today is the eviction deadline for the center, which received notice last month from the city that its corporate status had been revoked. The center is operated by Cora Masters Barry, former wife of Marion Barry. She says her committee has successfully filed the required paperwork and has paid fees and fines totaling about $500. Barry said, quote, “I’m hurt. This is the reason I get up in the morning, to do things for these kids.” A number of celebrities have expressed their support for Barry and her tennis center, including tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams and poet Maya Angelou. An attorney for the tennis center says the whole situation has caused a lot of stress for the children who participate in the programs, which not only include tennis lessons, but also reading lessons. Currently, the center is staffed by DC Department of Parks and Recreation employees. It’s unclear whether Mayor Adrian Fenty will step in and allow Barry and her students to stay, or at the very least, give them an extension.
