(Montgomery Co., MD) – The number of deadly pedestrian-involved accidents is on the increase in Montgomery County. Police say eleven pedestrians have died since the beginning of this year, compared to a total of six deaths recorded for all of 2012. According to the “Examiner,” the county has spent about five-million dollars a year since 2010 on pedestrian safety initiatives, but despite those efforts, county officials say the high number of deaths show that more must be done. Tina Slater, president of the nonprofit Action Committee for Transit, says the county places too much blame on pedestrians and isn’t educating drivers enough. Police say they conduct sting operations and ticket drivers who fail to yield, but agree that the county should increase its driver-focused initiatives.
