Amid recent encouraging reports of African-American students getting accepted to most or all of the Ivy League schools, comes new data suggesting that Harvard University may be leading the way on diversity. According to Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, the highly ranked institution’s class of 2018 will be 12 percent black, the largest representation of that group in the university’s history. The Alabama man who pleaded guilty to trying to hire a member of the Ku Klux Klan to kill his black neighbor got a reduced sentence on Monday and will serve six years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, WTVM reports. Read more.
The Center for American Progress issued a report on Friday that confirms that low-income students of color not only have less experienced teachers, but also less effective teachers. Read more.
Twenty-seven percent of Americans say President Barack Obama is black, while 52 percent say he’s mixed race. The Washington Post calls the data “fascinating.” But it’s actually not. The only thing fascinating (read: frustrating) is why Pew would force people to choose between these two options.
By setting up “black” and “mixed race” as mutually exclusive, as it appears to have done in the “Obama: Black or Mixed Race” (emphasis mine) portion of its poll, it offered Americans a misleading choice that doesn’t reflect their social reality, and certainly doesn’t tell us anything new about how they see their president.
