Ay, Shaq the sheriff!
Ok, technically, former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal is now a reserve police officer in Doral, Florida, but says he has aspirations to become a police chief or sheriff one day.
The 43-year-old former Miami Heat star, who gets his respect for lawmen honestly (two of O’Neal’s uncles were police officers), was sworn in by Doral police chief Donald De Lucca on Tuesday afternoon. He will not draw a salary, and he does not have a uniform for his 7-foot-1, 324-pound frame, though he will have a badge, according to the Miami Herald.
This is not Shaq’s first foray into law enforcement – he’s previously served as a reserve police officer for Miami Beach and Golden Beach in Florida, where De Lucca was also police chief, as well as in Tempe, Arizona and the Port of Los Angeles.

De Lucca told The Herald that Shaq will mostly be doing community work, serving as a role model for children.
O’Neal has two homes in Florida, and will commute from both Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. He told the Herald that he wanted to become a police chief or sheriff in the future, and hoped to learn from De Lucca.
“He’s a great leader. I’m learning from him, watching him. He’s a good friend of mine, and in order to become a great leader, you have to master their style and then create your own style.”
