The incident happened at the chain’s W.23rd Street location, in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. Esdaile allegdly approached Moctar Sy (pictured) and repeatedly shot him in the upper left chest and stomach, before shooting himself in the head, sources say.

The gunfire sent customers running from the store. Officials found Esdaile’s body in the store’s Aisle 12 section, along with his .38 caliber handgun. Paramedics rushed Sy to Bellevue Hospital, where he was declared dead around 3:30 p.m.

Police have yet to determine motives for the shooting; however, a former employee claims Esdaile, who worked at the location since 2011, had recently been fired.

Still, Alex Pereria said he couldn’t believe his former co-worker was capable of such violence, “This is a shock,” Pereria said. “We always talked and laughed. He was from the Caribbean, and I’m from the Caribbean, so we shared that vibe.”

Some witnesses say they suspect Esdaile killed Sy in revenge for his termination. Both men worked in the store’s lighting department.

Esdaile’s father also apologized for his son’s behavior.

“If it’s him, I’m sorry about this thing, and I’m sorry someone has to die by his hand,” said Calvin Esdaile Sr. The Father says his son came to the United States from Jamaica in 2006 and was living in Brooklyn at the time.

The younger Esdaile leaves behind a 6-year-old son.

Home Depot issued a statement about the attack, saying:

“We’re deeply saddened by this tragedy. We are fully cooperating with the authorities on their investigation of what appears to have been an isolated incident.”
