After noticing dozens of discriminatory insults on social media, South African President Jacob Zuma on Saturday condemned the “demon of racism,” reports AFP.

The president, speaking at the annual birthday celebration of the ruling African National Congress (ANC), noted that a small faction of South Africans miss the days of “apartheid White minority rule,” notes the news outlet.

Last week in a Facebook post, a White realtor compared Black beachgoers to monkeys. The group also condemned a White “economic analyst who wrote on Twitter of a growing ‘sense of entitlement and hatred towards minorities’ in South Africa,” notes the report.

From AFP:

It is clear that there is a tiny minority in our country that still harbours a desire for separate amenities and who idolise apartheid era leaders,” he said at the stadium in Rustenburg in the North West province.

“These people do not represent the true character of the new South Africa. They are living in the past.”

“We call on all people of this country to work together and defeat the demon of racism and tribalism,” said Zuma.

President Zuma pledged to pursue criminal charges against people who make discriminatory comments, which is a form of intimidation.
