Jason Dalton, 45, has been arrested and accused of being the mastermind behind a random and “unprovoked” shooting spree that killed six and injured 2 people in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on Saturday.
Over a period of four hours from around 6pm to 10pm, Dalton rode throughout town and just opened fire on a Kia car dealership, a Cracker Barrel and an apartment complex, Reuters reported. He killed four people in the restaurant parking lot alone in a matter of 15 minutes. It was originally reported that a 14-year old girl had died in that same parking lot, making the death toll 7, but it was later revealed that she was alive and in critical condition.
None of the names of the victims have been identified to the public yet.
As if this story couldn’t get any stranger, there are also reports coming in that Dalton, a local Uber driver, took fares during and after these killings, says CBS News. Apparently passengers took to social media to tell their stories:
One passengers sounded off about how “erratic” he was, and claimed to have called 9-1-1:
Matt Mellen, a man who claims to have been one of Dalton’s passengers, told WWMT “We were driving through medians, driving through the lawn, speeding along and when we came to a stop, I jumped out the car and ran away.”
And yet, despite these online complaints and the fact that he was armed and dangerous, police claim that upon arrest, Dalton, who is white, was “even tempered.” Confronted at a stop light, Dalton was brought to the station seemingly unharmed and “without incident,” CBS noted.
An ironic fact didn’t sat too well with some folks on Twitter:
Some also called out the media for their part in racially bias reporting:
Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting told CBS that “Dalton likely will face multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder in connection with the shootings Saturday” and he is expected to appear in court on Monday.
We send our deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones during this senseless shooting.
