Police officials in Fairborn, Ohio said one of its officers crossed a line when he posted an insensitive comment about a Black Lives Matter activist who committed suicide.
The department fired Officer Lee Cyr Tuesday, WDTN.com reports.
According to the Daytona Daily News, MarShawn McCarrel II shot himself Feb. 8 on the Ohio State House steps. Hours earlier, McCarrel, 23, posted this Facebook message: “My demons won today. I’m sorry.”
News of McCarrel’s suicide brought an outpouring of sympathy. But some, like Cyr, expressed contempt. His post read “Love a happy ending,” the TV station reports. It appeared on the Ohio Politics Facebook page two days following McCarrel’s death.
The city’s police department released a statement about the officer’s social media comment:
“This action is in violation of the department’s social media policy and does not conform to the Professional Standards & Core Values established by the organization.”
The department said it doesn’t matter that Cyr was off duty when he posted his statement. He was on paid leave while officials conducted an investigation.
In addition to his activism, McCarrel co-founded Feed the Streets, an organization that distributes home-made lunches to homeless people.
