Three police officers are expected to survive after they were shot during a chase of a suspect on Chicago's West side. The suspect was shot dead. Linda So reports.

A shootout Monday night ended with three Chicago police officers injured and the suspect dead, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Authorities said the officers were investigating a possible drug deal in the city’s west side. When the officers approached, the suspect ran away, turning to shoot as he fled.

He hit one officer in the back, the second in the foot, and the third in the chest. An officer fired his weapon in response, killing the suspect.

One officer was in serious-to-critical condition, but all are expected to recover from their injuries.

According to the newspaper, interim police Superintendent John Escalante said Mayor Rahm Emanuel visited the wounded officers at the hospital and released a statement acknowledging that the police routinely risk their lives to ensure public safety.

The mayor’s statement continued:

“Tonight we were reminded of the dangers that our police face, and the bravery that they routinely display as three of our officers were shot in line of duty. The thoughts and prayers of our entire city are with the officers and their families during this difficult time.”

Escalante said investigators recovered a gun from the suspect’s body and arrested a woman who reportedly accompanied him.
