Despite pulling the anti-vaccine documentary from the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival this week, Oscar-winner Robert De Niro is still defending the film.

On Wednesday, De Niro, who also has an autistic son, went on the Today Show to talk about Vaxxed and why he wants to know the “truth” about the connection between autism and vaccines.  Visibly emotional, he said, “I think the movie is something that people should see,” he said.

He added, “There’s a lot of information about things that are happening with the CDC, the pharmaceutical companies, there’s a lot of things that are not said. I, as a parent of a child who has autism, I’m concerned. And I want to know the truth. I’m not anti-vaccine. I want safe vaccines.”

De Niro claims he and his wife noticed that Elliot had changed “overnight.”

“I don’t remember. But my child is autistic, and every kid is different. But there’s something there, there’s something there that people aren’t addressing. And for me to get so upset here, on the Today show, with you guys, means there’s something there. That’s all I wanted, for the movie to be seen. You can make your own judgment. There are other films that document and show —it’s not such a simple thing,” he said.

Perhaps this is why De Niro believes that Vaxxed, which has been slammed by doctors and researchers, has something to offer to viewers. “There’s something there that people aren’t addressing. And for me to get so upset here, on the Today show, with you guys, means there’s something there. That’s all I wanted, for the movie to be seen. You can make your own judgment. There are other films that document and show —it’s not such a simple thing,” he said.

“I believe it’s much more complicated,” De Niro concluded when pressed about whether he knew about the current science that rejects the connection between the two.

While De Niro has been given spotlight to express his concerns, it’s important to point out that numerous trusted and esteemed studies have shown that despite what Jenny McCarthy would tell you, there is NO correlation between vaccines and autism. In addition, vaccines are “extremely safe” and numerous CDC studies show that “serious allergic reactions happen in less than one in 100,000 doses,” Jezebel pointed out.

De Niro came under fire last month when it was announced that his film festival would screen the film whose director Andrew Wakefield had medical license revoked in the UK, the Daily Mail wrote.
