Afeni Shakur Davis, mother of late rap legend Tupac Shakur who was the subject of one of his most iconic songs and who oversaw his posthumous legacy, has died. She was 69 years old.

Afeni Shakur, former member of the Black Panther Party and mother of rapper Tupac Shakur, died Monday in Northern California.

She was 69 years old.

Deputies from the Marin County Sheriff’s Department responded to a possible cardiac arrest situation around 9:34 p.m. at her home, USA Today reports. Shakur, born Alice Faye Williams, was transported to a nearby hospital. She was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Fans of Tupac will remember Shakur as the pillar behind his hit song, “Dear Mama,” in which he raps about the hardships Shakur endured raising him and his sister. After his 1996 death, she founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation to help foster art programs for the youth.

This is a developing story.
