President Obama and his team will petition an order from a federal judge that called for 50,000 immigration records to be turned over and Justice Department lawyers to undergo ethics training. On Tuesday, the Justice Department said it believes the judge who made the order, Judge Andrew Hanen of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, has surpassed “the scope of a court’s inherent power” by requesting to have the records turned over. Judge Hanen issued the order on May 19, ultimately blocking President Obama’s agenda to address immigration issues within our country. He claimed the government made falsifications in his court during an immigration case in 2015. “The department emphatically disagrees with the sanctions orders and will seek review of this matter in the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals,” said DOJ spokesman Patrick Rodenbush in a statement. In the appeal filed on Tuesday, the DOJ said their lawyers “adhere to the high standards of ethical conduct” and the entire department conducts their work “with the utmost seriousness the public trust committed to it.” According to the DOJ, ethics courses could cost nearly $8 million over the span of five years. Judge Hanen has called for a hearing slated to take place on June 7. Read more.
