Leadership Change At White House Initiative On HBCUs

The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities is under a leadership transition.

Ivory A. Toldson is leaving his position as executive director and will be replaced in July by Deputy Under Secretary of Education Kim Hunter Reed, who will serve as acting executive director of the Initiative, a source confirmed to NewsOne.

Toldson, a former professor at Howard University, served as deputy director of the Initiative since 2013 and was appointed executive director in 2015 by President Barack Obama when former executive director of the Initiative George Cooper died.

Diverse, which first reported Toldson’s departure, said he’s leaving the U.S. Education Department to become head of the Washington, D.C.-based organization Quality Education for Minorities.

Reed, Toldson’s interim replacement, came to the department in March and has been a member of the higher education leadership team. She was a faculty member at Southern University and also served as chief of staff for the Louisiana Board of Regents.
