Micah Johnson, the man authorities identified as one of the four suspects in the Dallas shooting, was enlisted in the U.S. military and served one tour of duty in Afghanistan, USA Today reports. Authorities now believe he is the lone gunman.

In March 2009, Johnson, 25, joined an Army Reserve unit in Seagoville, Texas, where he served four and a half years. He was sent to Afghanistan in 2013 and served eight months with the 420th Engineer Brigade, according to The Los Angeles Times.

He also received numerous accolades, including an Army Achievement Medal and a NATO Medal.

On Thursday evening, Johnson, along with three other suspects, opened fire at a Dallas rally in honor of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two Black men killed by police less than 72 hours apart. Five officers were killed at the rally, while seven other people were injured, including two civilians.

Johnson was killed early Thursday morning in a deadly shooting standoff after police detonated a robot bomb in the Dallas parking garage Johnson was encased in.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Johnson’s sister, Nicole, posted an emotional message on Facebook questioning her brother’s actions.

“I keep saying it’s not true. … My eyes hurt from crying,” she wrote and later deleted.

In a separate post she wrote, “The news will say what they think, but those that knew him know this wasn’t like him. This is the biggest loss we’ve had.”
