D.C.’s end-of-year crime data shows a 13% overall drop compared to pre-pandemic 2019, with violent crime down 35% and homicides reduced by 29%—from 255 last year to 182. Robberies, carjackings, and property crimes, including burglaries and vehicle thefts, have also decreased significantly.

Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Smith attribute the decline to initiatives like the Real-Time Crime Center, expanded CCTV programs, and efforts to keep violent offenders in custody.

However, some residents remain concerned about safety, particularly in the wake of violent crimes involving juveniles. Bowser acknowledged more work is needed and plans to focus on adding police officers, increasing surveillance, and introducing new legislation to maintain the downward trend.
