The Children’s Legacy Theatre in Anacostia is transforming the lives of D.C.’s youth, including those facing significant challenges like foster care, poverty, and legal troubles. Founded in 2016 by Jackie Carter, a former foster child herself, the program provides a safe space for children to explore the arts.

Each year, 150 children from Wards 7 and 8, aged 10 to 18, receive training in acting and behind-the-scenes roles—and they get paid for their work. Carter’s mission is to empower kids who often lack access to arts education. Students like 15-year-old Zacaria Manigault are thriving. “This organization has allowed me to open more doors,” Manigault said, as she prepares for a performance at the Kennedy Center.

The theatre’s impact extends beyond the stage. Former students have gone on to produce for major artists like Jay-Z and Beyoncé. Recognized for its efforts, the Children’s Legacy Theatre received the Kennedy Center Social Impact Award, and its entire 2025 season will take place at the Kennedy Center.

With over 400 children in foster care in D.C., 80% of whom are children of color, the theatre opens its doors to all, offering hope, opportunity, and a path to creating their own legacies.
