VIA MYFOXDC:

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for parts of the D.C. Metro area from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. The watch area excludes the District, but does cover many points west of D.C.

Forecasters say an extended period of freezing rain is possible beginning Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Precipitation is expected to begin Tuesday afternoon in the Central Shenandoah Highlands as a period of snow moving north to the Pennsylvania border early Tuesday evening. Precipitation is expected to mix with sleet and become heavier Tuesday evening and change to rain. However temperatures at the surface will stay below freezing, so rain that falls will freeze on impact.

Freezing rain is expected to continue throughout Tuesday night before warmer air moves in on Wednesday morning.

One-quarter inch of freezing rain accumulation is possible. The most likely place to receive that much would be in the colder, low-lying areas of the Shenandoah Valley and Allegheny Highlands.
