Although details are scant, there are wide reports indicating that 80s pop icon Teena Marie has passed away at the age of 54 today.

CNN’s Roland Martin has reported that Teena’s daughter found her body in her bedroom and that she recently had suffered from seizures. A Philidelphia radio station was the first to break the news. Soul singer Ron Isley also verified her death via Twitter.

Marie,  a former protegée of late funk legend Rick James, rose to prominance in the late 70s and 80s and is notable as one of the few successful white performers of R&B. She is most known for her collaborations with James and also for hits such as “Lovergirl” and “Squarebiz”.
