Verizon will offer wireless service for iPhones starting early next month. The long-awaited announcement was made to a crowd of tech reporters at a theater in New York’s Lincoln Center. Verizon CEO Lowell MacAdam called Apple “our strategic partner” and said talks began two years ago. Verizon’s partnership with Apple ends the gadget giant’s five-year exclusive deal with AT&T. Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said the company is “very, very excited to serve Verizon’s 93-million customers.”

The deal marries the nation’s largest wireless network to the world’s largest smartphone maker. Unlike well-publicized problems of dropped calls and spotty service plaguing AT&T when the iPhone launched in 2007, MacAdam predicts smooth sailing. He pointed out that it’s prepared for this day by building up its new fourth-generation wireless network in advance.
