The water main break disrupting traffic near 17th and P streets NW occurred after a contractor began working on a streetscape project in the area, Department of Transportation officials say.
The contractor lifted a catch basin, or manhole cover, and the water main broke. Officials said the 20 inch main was installed in the 1880s.
