Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates told reporters Wednesday that though he believes “somebody” in Pakistan knew of Osama Bin Laden’s whereabouts, there is no substantial proof that senior members of the country’s government were aware.

Political pundits and critics have questioned whether the country’s senior leadership knew and did not disclose of  Bin Laden hideout since news that Bin Laden was found hiding in the Pakistani Garrison town of Abbottabad, a small city located about 30 miles from the country’s capitol.

Such assertions have complicated an already tenuous relationship between the Obama administration and Pakistan, a key ally in the War on Terror.

Working to lay such claims to rest, Gates told reporter, “somebody knew,” but said it is irresponsible to wage accusations on the Pakistani government without justifiable evidence.
