Despite claiming to disavow racism, Doles was identified as the leader of the America Patriots USA, a white nationalist group based in Dahlonega, Ga. The Southern Poverty Law Center has recognized the group as one of approximately two dozen hate groups operating within the state.

Longtime North Carolina Rep. G.K. Butterfield, who presides over a district that has been held by a Black representative for nearly the last 30 years, won't seek re-election in part because of a "racially gerrymandered" redrawn congressional map.

While some have positioned the close race as a cause for concern, it was a historic victory. Murphy is the first Democrat to win re-election in the Garden State in over 40 years. Although the nation's attention focused on the failing of former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, the narrow win in New Jersey offers a glimpse at building on policy strengths and a generally positive trend for the state.
